  3. Hi Rebecca,
I'm enjoying leafing through your blog. Are there special sections that detail your travel experiences? I have a son with severe peanut, tree nut and kiwi allergy. I've been dying to take him to Italy (my father was born and raised in a small town in Calabria and also in Paris) with my own family and parents to share that experience together...but I have to admit I'm terrified. It seems as if the town where my father is from uses hazelnuts in everything - which is his worst allergy. How do you handle this? What are your experiences travelling overseas? Thanks so much, Laura

    1. Hi Laura! Thank you so much for your interest in my blog! I hope you are finding some useful information. I haven't sectioned out the travel posts because most all of them contain recipes as well. I did, however, write a guest post for Food Farm Health describing some of the steps and percautions I take when traveling. It is by no means a complete list, however. Here's the link:

(you may have to copy and paste it into your browser.)

What a wonderful opportunity to take your son to Italy! I have not had the opportunity to travel with my daughter internationally yet (as she is only 2), but I definitely intend to take her back to my adopted home, Tuscany, when she's a little older. You're right. It's very scary to travel in Europe with a nut allergy. They use nuts in EVERYTHING.

First of all, contact the airline to make sure your flight will be peanut free. If they only offer you a "buffer zone" DON'T fly with them. Since you'll be traveling with your father, I'd suggest you have him translate for you, and explain the allergy to everyone who will have contact with your son's food. I'd also carry several notes/cards writen in Italian and French, detailing your son's allergies and their severity to give to the waitstaff, chefs, and bakery vendors where you plan to eat. Here is a website that can help:

Learn the Italian names for the nuts to which your son is allergic and carry the list with you to help you decipher food labels (if your father is fluent he can help you with this, too). In my opinion, the more people who know, the safer you are.

I would pack a lot of safe food for him in your checked luggage, for those cases when you are unsure. (I generally save 1/3 of my luggage space for food) I think that if the packages are unopened they should be okay. I've never had a Customs Agent ask me about food while going through Customs in Italy.

I hope that helps a little. Traveling with a food allergy is very intimidating! I applaud you for wanting to show your son the world. He deserves it! I hope you have a wonderful and safe time!

  8. Dear Rebecca,
I am contacting you and a few folks who have expressed a potential interest in joining our Culinary Trip to Germany and France this October.
The trip has been filling up quickly. We have only two more open spots. Our group is one couple, one mother-daughter team, and 4 women (plus your two travel guides, Michele and me), so a really nice mix!
Here's a link (http://www.mykitchenintherockies.com/2013/01/09/announcing-a-culinary-trip-to-heidelberg-baden-baden-and-strasbourg-october-2013/) to the details of the trip. And certainly please do forward to any friends you think might like to join us as well.
I would love for you to come along.
    Best Regards
    Kirsten

  9. Thanks for creating effort to speak concerning it. the I expertise extremely concerning it and like finding out a lot of on this subject. I actually have been browsing on-line over 3 hours these days, nonetheless I ne'er found any attention-grabbing article like yours. it's pretty value enough on behalf of me. In my opinion, if all web site homeowners and bloggers created smart content as you probably did, the net can be lots a lot of helpful than ever before.Flying with Family
